Napier is Best South African Wine Producer
Bingen/Wellington, 18. September 2017. Following this year’s spring tastings for the Berlin Wine Trophy, Napier Vineyards from Wellington has won the “Best Producer ‘Still Wine‘ South Africa” top accolade. Reh Kendermann GmbH, based in Bingen, Germany, acquired the South African estate on 1 April this year.
“The award for Best Still Wine Producer fills us with pride and illustrates the huge potential that lies in the still relatively unknown wine region of Wellington,” says Alexander Rittlinger, managing director of Napier Vineyards GmbH. “We are convinced that Napier is a real jewel and we are delighted that the jury has paid tribute to our high quality with this top accolade.”
Consistently high quality
The winners of the top accolades in the Berlin Wine Trophy must meet particular criteria: the jury in Berlin takes the results of the summer trophy of 2016 as well as the medals from the spring tasting into consideration , thereby honouring consistently high quality. The Best Still Wine Producer needs at least three gold medals. The Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and Single Vineyard St Catherine Chardonnay premium wines both won Gold medals in summer 2016. In the 2017 spring tastings in Berlin, Lion Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz from the mid-range price segment also received Gold and the Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon won Gold again for a second consecutive year. “All the medals as well as the special award of Best Still Wine Producer in South Africa show that we are on the right track with Napier. We want to consolidate this success in the future,” says Alexander Rittlinger. Since April this year, the estate has been in the hands of Reh Kendermann under the company name Napier Vineyards GmbH. Winemaker Leon Bester continues to be responsible for the vineyards and winemaking in South Africa whilesales and marketing activities are conducted from Bingen.
A further honour
In the summer tastings of the Berlin Wine Trophy in July, the jury again confirmed the quality of Napier’s wines: the Single Vineyard St Catherine Chardonnay, Lion Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz and Lion Creek Chenin Blanc Sauvignon Blanc all won Gold. The wines from Wellington have also been a big hit aside from Berlin: the Single Vineyard St Catherine Chardonnay, Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and Red Medaillon, Napier’s premium blend and the brand flagship, all received a four-star rating in the renowned “John Platter’s South African Wine Guide” 2017 edition.
Wine competition of international importance
The international Berlin Wine Trophy competition is one of the biggest in the world and is also one of the most important awards in Germany. Under the patronage of the OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine), the highly qualified members of the jury from around the world taste and rate wines from wine-producing areas not only in Germany but also from all major wine-producing countries. The Berlin Wine Trophy is held twice a year. On average around 5,000 wines are tasted and rated. The top accolades are awarded following the spring tasting.
